Global China Fellowship Programme

The Global China Fellowship Programme at Lund University supports outstanding early‑career scholars whose work contributes to advancing critical, interdisciplinary understandings of the patterns and processes underpinning contemporary Chinese globalisation. Fellows contribute directly to the research environment at the Centre for East and Southeast Asian Studies and participate in ongoing projects led by the Centre’s researchers. They join a vibrant cohort of scholars, engage with the Centre's graduate education, and help produce cutting‑edge research that deepens global perspectives on China’s contemporary transformations. The Fellowship Programme is made possible with the support of the British Academy's 'Chinese Global Orders' Convening Programme.

Shan Hei Anna Ting

Anna holds a MSc in Asian Studies from the Centre for East and Southeast Asian Studies and a BA in Liberal Arts (History and Anthropology) from Durham University. Her research interests broadly surround Hong Kong's evolving sociopolitical and cultural environments, understandings of (post-)colonial legacies, and everyday experiences in contemporary Hong Kong. She is particularly interested in the role of language and food practices as mediators for senses of belonging, affective solidarity, and identity, and social media as a site of contestation. Currently, she is examining the movement of capital in and out of Hong Kong and Singapore during the 19th and early 20th century, as well as exploring state-society relations in contemporary Hong Kong.

Meryem Alouane

Meryem Alouane was the 2025 Global China Predoctoral Fellow at the Centre for East and Southeast Asian Studies, Lund University. An alumna of the Centre, she holds a Master’s degree in Asian Studies. During her fellowship, Meryem’s research examined the dynamics of Chinese investment in Ghana. Her work investigates how Ghanaian newspapers frame narratives surrounding Chinese involvement in the gold-mining sector, covering both artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) and large-scale formal investment. Her research interests include Global China, China-Africa relations, and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Africa, with a particular focus on the political, economic, and media narratives shaping engagement between China and African countries across the Global South.
