Visiting PhD Research Fellows
The Centre has open calls for applications for Visiting PhD Research Fellows twice per year.
The Centre has open calls for Visiting PhD Research Fellows from 1 October to 30 November (for those wishing to start in the spring term) and 1 March to 30 April (for those wishing to start in the autumn term). Preference will be given to applicants whose research is related to the Centre’s research agenda and the research of individual staff members. The number of Visiting PhD Research Fellows the Centre can host in any given term depends on office space and the availability of permanent members of staff to act as a mentor during the stay.
The appointment as a Visiting PhD Research Fellow does not include any remuneration, but Fellows will be allocated a shared office and will be able to use the Asia Library and any other library facilities at Lund University. Visiting PhD Research Fellows will also have the chance to present their work in at least one public lecture or research seminar during their stay, and will benefit from the rich research environment at the Centre, consisting of senior academic staff and researchers, and a cohort of interdisciplinary PhD scholars working in a range of Asian contexts.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit the following materials to nicholas [dot] loubere [at] ace [dot] lu [dot] se (Nicholas Loubere)
- A short CV
- A one-page research proposal
- A one-page motivation letter
Application periods

Stays can be for any period of time up to a maximum of one year. Those seeking to stay for a period covering more than one term will need to reapply during the stay, and will be admitted an ongoing place depending on staff and office availability, as well as a track record of active participation in Centre activities. Starting times are flexible, but applicants should specify the expected start date and the length of the stay in the motivation letter. Normally, applicants should apply for a position in the application round prior to the period they intend to start, but it is also possible to apply further in advance if an acceptance is required to apply for funding.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome two weeks after the call closing date.
For PhD students based at Swedish institutions, some funded mobility options are available through the Graduate School in Asian Studies.
