Stefan Brehm
Senior lecturer
Stefan studied Economics and Chinese at Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen, Germany and Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei, Taiwan. He received a Diploma in International Economics from Tübingen University in 2002 and was a Ph. D. fellow at the post-graduate research programme "Global Challenges - Transnational and Transcultural Approaches" from 2002 to 2005. He defended his Ph. D. thesis on "Chinas Integration into a Global Financial Order" in 2005 (‘summa cum laude).
In 2006 he became a post-doctoral fellow at the Centre for East and South East Asian Studies. After one year of parental leave he rejoined the Center in 2009 as research fellow and lecturer.
Stefan is also co-founder of Globalworks Lund AB, a consultancy firm specialized in business intelligence for social engagement in China. Globalworks was awarded the title ‘start-up of the year 2013’ in Lund
Research
On a general note Stefan’s research is concerned with the dynamics and consequences of political and social change in China. During the past ten years he worked on a wide range of topics: His Ph.D. thesis dealt with the political economy of financial market regulation in China. Later he worked on China’s fiscal system as well as the role of universities in China’s national system of innovation.
Stefan’s most recent project seeks to understand technology and in particular the Internet as a motor for social and political change in China. In this context he is mainly concerned with the production and commodification of data and he is a member of the research group Digital China

Other recent research is concerned with the effectiveness of environmental policies as well as public perceptions on environmental protection.

Teaching
Stefan is teaching courses on development economics, economic transition in Asia, China’s economic reforms, as well as quantitative methods.
Stefan is also working on a theoretical project on the use and impact of new technologies in higher education.
