History of the Asia library

The Asia Library, the foremost library of its kind in Sweden, was created in 1999 when the newly established library at the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies was merged with the library at the Department of East Asian Languages. The two institutions jointly ran the Asia Library until 2006. Between 2006 and 2018 the library was run by the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies.

Between 1999-2016 the Asia Library was located at Ideon, and since January 2017 it is located at Sölvegatan 18 B. With the Centre's organisational move to the Joint Faculty of Humanities and Theology in January 2019 it was also decided that the Asia Library would from now on be managed by the Libraries of the Joint Faculty of Humanities and Theology. The Asia Library has thus become the third library together with SOL and LUX. It is however still housed on the same premises as the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies.

The library has a national responsibility to provide documentation about contemporary East and South-East Asia.
