Gina Song Lopez has published an article in the International Journal of Taiwan Studies examining the development of a ‘new’ vegan movement in Taiwan over the past decade.

The article examines the emergence of a new cohort of animal rights and vegan advocacy actors in the wake of the socially receptive period that followed the Sunflower Movement. The paper introduces the activists and organizations at the heart of changing approaches to animal advocacy and meatless lifestyles, the routes of vegan diffusion, and the new identities and spaces involved in the making of Taiwan’s contemporary vegan movement. The study also highlights the negotiations at play in movement mainstreaming as advocates have moved into closer alignment with sustainability rationales, with some groups also becoming engaged in recent food-focused climate policy efforts.
