Niall Duggan graduated from the Masters Programme in Asian Studies in 2007. He is now the Director of the MSC International Public Policy and Diplomacy at Department of Government, University College Cork, Ireland (UCC).

Why did you decide to study the Master’s programme in Asian Studies at Lund University?
After finishing my undergraduate programme I developed an interest in International political economy with a particular interest in East Asia. Lund University is a world-class university and the Master's programme in Asia Studies matched my interest in  East Asia economic development

What has the master programme meant to you professionally?
After my master I completed a PhD in International Relations having a background in Asian studies meant that I could get positions in both area studies departments and political science departments. Professionally the program has allowed me to be flexible and adapt to changes in the jobs market.

What advice would you give to potential and current students?
Life does not allows go the way you plan, be flexible and open-minded, you will get where you want to go but it may not always be on the path you think.

Do you have any recommendations for our current students who might be thinking about an academic career?
Universities across the world are going through major changes as a result entering academic careers requires a wide range of skills. Be open to adopting new skills and be flexible in your approach.

What is your favourite memory from your time at the Centre and/or Lund?
The friends and classmates I made during my time at the centre
