Gina Song Lopez

(Chih-Lan Song)

As a PhD candidate at the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies my project focuses on the development and expansion of the Plant-based/Vegan movement in Taiwan and China. My interest in this topic draws from the environmental politics of food, and the emergence of modern sustainability and animal advocacy discourses in the region. I hope that my research can bring both attention to the growth of these movements in the East Asia which mirrors the global zeitgeist in terms of sustainability concerns and animal ethics, and also highlight their qualities and differences in their local contexts.

My almae matres include the University of Queensland (Australia) where I majored in Political Science and International Relations as part of my BA, and the National Chengchi University (Taiwan), where I received my MA degree in Asia-Pacific Studies in 2017. Afterwards, I joined the Institute of Political Science at Academia Sinica (IPSAS) in Taiwan as a full-time research assistant until August 2020.
