CÖSM50: Qualified Internship in Asian Studies
The course consists of an internship aimed to prepare you for a future working life.
You will have the opportunity to relate your academic skills to professional assignments and establish contacts in working life. The internship is located at a workplace in Sweden or abroad with a clear connection to the main field of Asian Studies.
It is to comprise at least 16 weeks of full-time work. Supported by supervision in the host organisation, you are to work with qualified and varying assignments. The assignments are to have a connection with the completed programme in Asian Studies and you are to have the opportunity to use and develop your knowledge and skills in Asian Studies.
Throughout the course you are to keep a portfolio of completed assignments which will serve as one of the assessed components. Furthermore, you are to write a paper reflecting on the relationship between theory and practice. Both assignments will enable you to develop an understanding of the relationship between academic knowledge and practical application. The assignments require at least 4 weeks of full-time work.
The work placement must be approved by the course director. In order for the work placement to be approved, the host organisation must sign an agreement in accordance with the department's demands on relevant, varied and qualified assignments in Asian Studies.
How to apply
Applications for the course should in the normal case be applied for through Universityadmissions.se during the regular admission rounds. The application deadline is usually the 15th of April for the autumn semester and the 15th of October for spring.
However, If you want to do your internship with short notice, you apply like this:
- If you are not a student of the Master's Programme in Asian Studies given by the Centre, start by contacting Nina Brand to make sure you fulfil the admission requirements.
- If you fulfil the requirements, you then contact Stefan Brehm to discuss the planned internship and to make sure that the internship fulfils the requirements in the course syllabus.
- Contact the host institution and negotiate an internship agreement. Our approval of your host institution will depend on whether they can provide you with opportunities to apply your academic Asia knowledge during the internship. See the the CÖSM50 course syllabus for what is required and use the internship agreement (word document) to set up the agreement with the host institution.
- Once Stefan has approved the text in the agreement you and the host institution sign the agreement and you then send the signed agreement to Stefan so that she can sign it as well and the agreement can be registered in the Lund University registry system.
Please note that it is not possible to do the internship over the summer.

Entry requirements: To be eligible to the course, students must have a degree of Master (120 credits) in Asian Studies, or the equivalent. Oral and written proficiency in English equivalent to English 6/B from Swedish upper secondary school is a requirement.
