Organization

The Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies from 1 January 2019 belongs to the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology. It is a section at the Department of History.


Background

The Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies was established on 1 November 1996 by the Lund University board. Its establishment was a result of the university strengthening its work on East and South-East Asia and receiving financial support in the government’s research bill, which also meant some national responsibility.


Purpose and mission

The Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies shall conduct and promote education and research with a focus on East and South-East Asia. It shall in particular promote cooperation across faculties.


The mission of the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies is to:

  • Stimulate and conduct research, particularly interdisciplinary research, with a focus on contemporary societies in East and South-East Asia;
  • Run education on bachelor and advanced levels with a focus on East and South-East Asia;
  • Run a Ph.D. programme and be a resource for Ph.D. students at other departments in Lund and nationally with a focus on the region;
  • Together with the HT-libraries run a library with a focus on contemporary societies in East and South-East Asia;
  • Function as a resource for the university management and the faculties when it comes to education and research concerning the region as well as in contact with universities in East and South-East Asia;
  • Promote knowledge about East and South-East Asia through different public events and open access publications and through cooperation with different stakeholders such as authorities and civil society;
  • Stimulate and initiate research and collaboration with researchers and institutions at other Swedish universities;
  • Promote contacts, exchanges, and collaborations with Asian Studies centres in the Nordic countries and internationally, as well as with universities in East and South-East Asia.


The board

The Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies shall have a board whose task is to promote the strategic work at the Centre and stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration across the faculties. The board shall consist of at the most ten members and be composed of:

  • The director, chairperson
  • Three scientifically competent teachers at the Centre
  • The Head of the Department of History
  • Two representatives from the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology, the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the School of Economics
  • One representative with research competence on East and South-East Asia from another Swedish or Nordic research centre or university
  • The students have the right to be represented with two members


The board of the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology appoints the members of the Centre board on the recommendation of the Director. The term for the members of the board is three years with the exception of the student representatives.


The Director

There shall be a director at the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies. The director, who shall be a scientifically competent teacher, is appointed for a period of three years by the board of the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology after a proposal from the Centre staff. In accordance with the Lund University work procedure the Director shall be responsible for ensuring that the Centre is run with high quality and within the mandate of the Centre. The Director represents the Centre within and outside of Lund University and is the chairperson of the Centre’s board.


Financing

The Centre’s financial means is allotted by the university board and allocated by the board of the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology to the Department of History as special funds for the Centre.


The budget proposal and work plan is prepared by the Centre board and decided by the board of the Department of History.


Staff

Staff can be appointed at the Centre. Appointment of staff is done according to the regulations laid down at the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology and the university in general.
