 lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, and queer (LGBTQ) people in moder
 n Japan has a longer and more complicated history than is often thought. F
 rom HIV/AIDS policy to personal privacy laws to debates over reproductivit
 y\, marriage\, and citizenship\, LGBTQ activism has been linked to a wide 
 range of social\, political\, and economic issues and remains central to J
 apanese politics today. How have LGBTQ activists framed and articulated sp
 ecific issues\, and how have politicians\, policymakers\, and everyday cit
 izens responded to their concerns? This talk will examine how perceptions 
 of gender and sexuality changed in Japan after World War II\, how LGBTQ ac
 tivism began to emerge as a political force in the 1980s and 1990s\, and h
 ow debates about LGBTQ communities and policies have evolved and internati
 onalized in the 21st century.&nbsp\;Bio:&nbsp\;Patrick Carland-Echavarria 
 is currently Tanaka Junior Research Fellow in Japanese Studies at Pembroke
  College\, University of Oxford. He received his PhD in East Asian Languag
 es and Civilizations from the University of Pennsylvania in 2025. His rese
 arch focus on queer literature\, politics\, and subcultures in postwar and
  contemporary Japan. His work has been published in The Asia-Pacific Journ
 al: Japan Focus&nbsp\;and The Journal of American-East Asian Relations\,&n
 bsp\;and he has forthcoming articles for Japan Review\, The Journal of Jap
 anese Studies\,&nbsp\;and Mishima Yukio Kenkyū&nbsp\;(Yukio Mishima Studi
