From Independent Filmmaking to Activism on Food Sustainability
A talk with Jian Yi, filmmaker, activist and founder of the Good Food Fund.
Jian Yi is a filmmaker and activist. He has a MA in International Peace Studies and a MA in International Journalism. In 2009 he established IFChina, an initiative engaging ordinary citizens and collecting and documentary social memory. Roughly ten years ago, Jian Yi learned about the impact of the meat industry on the environment and decided to do something. His film What’s for Dinner examined the rapidly increasing consumption of animal-based foods in China that mirrors the country’s rapid economic growth. In 2017 he established the Good Food Fund, a pioneer initiative in China's food systems transformation. The organization is concerned with solving the problems of biodiversity loss, climate change, hunger, unhealthy diets, food waste, and abuse of farmed animals through food system transformation. In 2021 he was also instrumental in establishing the China Vegan Society. In this event Jian Yi will share his experiences and work.
