This sharing session presents my ongoing work in visualising the experiences of Chineseness in Southeast Asia through photography, text and video. I use Chineseness to signify two things: (1) the contingent experience of performing Chineseness, and/or (2) the looming spectre of China in Southeast Asia. In my work, I develop the concept of embodiment alongside the proposition of documenting as method to unpack the experiences of Chineseness, photography and ethnography in Southeast Asia. I would share and reflect on my work in this session. 

Zhuang Wubin is a photographic artist, writer, curator and academic. Among many other things he is an editorial board member of Trans-Asia Photography Review, and the author of Photography in Southeast Asia: A Survey (2016, NUS Press)  and Shifting Currents: Glimpses of a Changing Nation (2018) which features the work of Singaporean photographer Kouo Shang-Wei.
