New publication on academic freedom in China

black and yellow journal cover

Marina Svensson has published an article entitled “Chinese universities: restrictions on academic freedom and global implications.”

The article is included in the volume China: Shifting Power and Human Rights Diplomacy edited by David Ismangil, Karen van der Schaaf and Stijn Deklerck, and published by Amnesty International.

The article discusses Chinese academic development over the years and the internationalization of Chinese universities. It also addresses how political control is exercised over students and faculty, the lack of academic freedom, and repression of critical scholars. It also reflects on China’s growing global role in higher education and the possible implications for foreign universities and academic freedom worldwide.

The publication is open access and can be read here
