Visualizing Asian Cities Photo Contest

The Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies announces a photo contest for students enrolled at Lund University.

Asian cities are vibrant and diverse places that reflect unique histories at the same time as they are undergoing rapid changes.  The cities are however often depicted in rather stereotypical fashion in media so the challenge is to explore and visualize cities through images that show complexities, contradictions, and changes.

The ”Visualizing Asian Cities” Photo Contest encourages participants to submit a photo in one of the following categories:

Traditions and heritage
Participants are invited to explore and visualize different aspects of history, traditions, and heritage sites in the city.

Hidden places
Participants are invited to explore and visualize hidden places that reveal new things about the city and contrast or challenge images of sites, buildings and places that are used in city and tourism branding

Dreams and creativity
Participants are invited to explore and visualise the dreams that draw people to the city, and creative spaces and activities in the city.

The contest launches on 30 November 2018 and will close on 15 March 2019.

Eligibility

This contest is open to students enrolled at Lund University at the time of the competition.

Jury and selection process

The winners of the competition are selected by a jury consisting of:

Nina Brand (liaison officer at the Centre)
Fu Yongjun (photographer and lecturer at Zhejiang University of Media and Communications)
Christer Lindberg (professor of anthropology, Lund University)

The winners will be selected according to the following criteria:

  • relevance to the contest/category
  • creativity and originality
  • composition and overall impression

Exhibition and Prizes

Ten photographs in each category will be selected. The selected photographs will be printed and put on display in an exhibition at the Centre from 8 April to 31 May 2019. In connection with the vernissage invited experts will showcase and discuss the photographs and the role of photography more generally. After the exhibition the photos will be given to the photographers, provided that the photographer can collect the photograph him/herself (it will not be sent by mail). In each category one winner will also be selected as category winner and receive a photography book as a prize. The second and third prize winner will get selected items from Lund University Shop.

The photographs will also be shared on the Centre's Instagram account @asiastudieslund and Facebook page
