His research focuses on the role of institutional and physical infrastructures in the context of economies at an early stage of economic development in East and South-East Asia. Dr. Christian Göbel is a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre. His research focuses on change and persistence of democratic and authoritarian systems in East and South-East Asia. Christian teaches the courses “Political Systems, Governance, and Democratization in East and South-east Asia” and the course on contemporary China. He also tutors students writing on theses within his area of expertise.

Her research focus is on religion and nationalism in South Asia. Catarina co-teaches courses on South-Asia, international relations and reliogious issues. She also tutors students writing on theses within her area of expertise.

Dr. Ann Kull is a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre. Her research interests concern contemporary interpretations of Islam, their diffusion and role in society development in Indonesia. She focuses on the issues of gender in Islamic educational and on women’s rights. Ann teaches the courses “Religion, Identity, Politics and Society in Asia”, the course on contemporary South-East Asian societies and gives lectures in the introduction course. She also tutors students writing on theses within her area of expertise.

Dr. Monica Lindberg Falk is a researcher at the Centre and she is also the Director of Studies. Her research focus is on gender, religion, social change and disasters in South-East Asia. Monica teaches the courses “Gender in Asia, the course on contemporary South-East Asian societies and she is course director for the introduction course. Dr. Annika Pissin is a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre. Her research focuses on the UN concept of human security in relation to children in China. Annika gives lectures in the courses on “Human Rights in Asia”, “Gender in Asia” and in the introduction course. She is also teaching the course on contemporary China and she supervises students writing on M.A. theses within her area of expertise.

Dr. Barbara Schulte is a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre. Her research focuses on issues of educational governance, transnational educational actors and organisations, and the discursive construction of the educational field in China. Barbara teaches courses on contemporary China, “Framing realities: Analysing discourse” and the introduction course. She also supervises students writing theses within her area of expertise.

Dr. Tommy Shih is a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre. His research focuses on business, with focus on industrial networks in Taiwan and innovation and industrial policy in Taiwan and Japan, with a focus on the relation between science and business development. Tommy teaches the course “Business & Innovation in Asia” and gives lectures in the course on contemporary Japan and Korea. He also supervises students writing theses within his area of expertise.
