The first semester of the programme begins with a course introducing you to Asian studies and the main challenges and theoretical concepts used in area studies and interdisciplinary studies. This is followed by thematic and region-specific courses discussing the major social, economic and political issues in the respective areas.
The second semester consists of one region specific course and a course in research methods.
The third semester consists of optional courses that will deepen your understanding of various aspects of Asian societies and prepare you for your thesis work.
The optional courses at the Centre include courses on the economy, international relations, gender, human rights, development, media and popular culture, religion and politics, discourse analysis and environmental issues. The optional courses (chosen after obtaining the approval of the programme coordinator) will enable you to tailor the programme to suit your particular interests. During the end of the third semester you can chose to take a fieldwork course either at one our partner universities in Asia or here in Lund.
During the fourth and last semester you will complete the programme with a written thesis, which will provide the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of theories, methods and analysis of empirical data in the field of Asian studies.
